Nearly a decade ago, I began freelance writing. I was directionless, and I didn’t have any industry connections, so I did the only thing I knew how to do: search for editors’ email addresses on the internet and send cold pitches.
I got rejected a lot. And I wrote for free a lot. But as the months and years went by, my pitches started getting accepted, and I began to focus my writing on entertainment (although I dabble in labor and wellness, too). I’m an L.A. girl, and I’ve always loved TV and movies — it was a natural fit.
Now, I’m an individually-approved critic on Rotten Tomatoes, and I’ve written for publications I once only dreamed might accept my work: Slate, Polygon, Bustle, VICE, Bitch Media (RIP). I do have connections now, and I mostly get paid to write. I forced my way into this industry through sheer will and just… trying my hardest.
But just like when I first started sending pitches, my ideas still get rejected more than they get accepted. And editors have good reasons for saying “no” — some of my pitches are poorly timed or aren’t fully developed. But others still deserve to see the light of day.
I’m so excited to create a space for all of my half-baked ideas, unhinged takes, and ill-advised musings. Thanks so much for reading my rejected pitches. <3
